competence - Change Leadership

Change Leadership. 

·         Grasps the essence of new information. Learning capability.
·         Masters new technical and business knowledge. 
·         Recognizes own strengths and weaknesses. 
·         Pursues self-development. 
·         Seeks opportunities to master new knowledge.
·         Initiates and manages cultural change within the organization to impact organizational effectiveness.  Values cultural diversity and other individual differences in the workforce.  Ensures that the organization build on these differences and that employees are treated in a a fair and equitable manner.

Situaner: Change is the only constant thing in the world. We must be able to adapt ourselves to situation. Invincibility lies in defense while victory can only be gained in attack. The skillful commander takes a position in which he cannot be defeated and misses not opportunity to master his opponent. No war can be won by adapting a static position. Thus, we must act relentlessly to master the situation and derive victory from the situation.

Skill Builder Program:
1.       Subscribe to a publication that covers an area of which you have not had previous exposure or experience.
2.       Try a new skill in a volunteer organization. i.e. facilitating skills, mentoring
3.       Spend time with experts, model others who are competent at a skill you are interested in acquiring.
4.       Read books, articles and manuals.
5.       Conduct research; seek information from others.
6.       Go out lunch with someone different.
7.       Complete the Leadership Needs Assessment Tool.
8.       Expose yourself to other cultures through reading, watching movies, attending festivals, traveling.  Request materials from embassies. 
9.       Participate in special employment program activities. i.e. job fair
10.    Join an organization affiliated with a cultural group in which you have an interest.
11.    Visit museums. i.e. XU Museum
12.    Host a visitor from another country.
13.    Make a concerted effort to ensure you are promoting an atmosphere of inclusiveness that values diversity.
14.    Address cultural and geographic differences in strategies and approaches you are working on in your job.
15.    Discuss the richness of diversity in society with your friends and  family.
16.    Schedule and participate in cultural awareness events
17.    Conduct short discussions with professionals in unfamiliar disciplines to gain knowledge.
18.    Take on a special assignment that will challenge you
19.    Arrange a detail in another part of the organization to gain experience
20.    Prepare a list of required competencies and knowledge to achieve career goal.
21.    Serve as a mentor, advisor, or trainer for new employees.
22.    Maintain a Journal: Get regular feedback from a variety of people on a regular basis to learn how you are doing in a particular skill area, track your progress, record your learning.
23.    Teach someone in the organization something you just learned or in which you have expertise. 
24.    Extend yourself to people in the organization whose backgrounds differ from yours.
25.    Try to learn something new every day and apply it to work.  Find time to reflect on what you have learned and how you can improve. Write this process in your personal journal.

Illustration:

A Trade Inventory Management program is being rolled out by a Principal to its distributors. The program involves learning the basic formula of computing right inventory to prevent OOS and a worksheet to be coordinated with trade partners and maintained continuously.  Arvin, a sales executive, invests his attention and note taking during the sales brief and reviews the manual every night to master the principle. Arvin executes the whole program effectively.
